Lewis Auto Hire has delivered the first fully electric 4x4 vehicles onto site at Uungula Wind Farm.

The Squadron Energy wind project will be trialling 4x4 EVs on site for the duration of construction. These will be replacing existing diesel vehicles.

Lewis Auto Hire owner Luke Lewis, who grew up in Dubbo, said they made the pivot into electric 4x4s at the end of last year.

“The move into EVs was a deliberate one,” Mr Lewis said.

"With a fleet of more than 800 diesel vehicles nationally, we wanted to support the mining, oil and gas, renewables, and construction sectors with their decarbonisation goals while also offering a genuine carbon-neutral alternative.

"It made sense for us to offset part of our own footprint by leading with innovation rather than waiting for the market to move.

“After partnering with AusEV out of Brisbane. We now have a fleet of F-150 Lightnings deployed across the country – from some of the most remote iron ore operations in the Pilbara, to coal mines in Far North Queensland, through to councils and metro clients nationally.

“Our partnership with AusEV means we are not only bringing in one of the world’s most reliable trucks, but we are also boosting the local economy by supporting Australian manufacturing through the remanufacturing of these vehicles from left-to-right-hand drive in Brisbane.

“We couldn’t have achieved the success we’ve had without valued partners like Squadron Energy and Nacap. They’re truly at the forefront when it comes to renewable-focused projects like Uungula Wind Farm. It would be great to see more organisations lean into renewable options on wind, solar, and other clean energy developments like Nacap.”

Nacap Project Manager Scott Sartori said Nacap are committed to renewable energy and this was a great opportunity for Nacap to approach Lewis to trial the vehicles on the Squadron Energy developed Uungula Wind Farm.

“Partnering with local companies while decarbonising the fleet is a smart model and we are looking forward to expanding this model and approach on future projects,” Mr Sartori said.

Squadron Energy Executive General Manager, Development and Delivery Tony Clark said deploying fully electric 4x4s at Uungula Wind Farm is another step in reducing emissions across Squadron’s operations.

“These vehicles will be used for site inspections, crew transport and day-to-day construction support, replacing traditional diesel utes,” Mr Clark said.

“By partnering with innovative suppliers like Lewis Auto Hire, we’re not only cutting our carbon footprint but also supporting local businesses that share our commitment to a clean energy future.”

Mr Lewis started his career in Dubbo as a diesel mechanic before heading to the Pilbara to continue in the trade.

“A couple of years in, I noticed a gap in the market and hired out my first flat-bed truck in 2012. Since then, we’ve grown the business to a national fleet of over 800 vehicles,” Mr Lewis said.
