Squadron Energy CEO Rob Wheals today called for action to keep the renewable energy transition moving.

Speaking at the Clean Energy Council’s Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney, Mr Wheals urged the industry to keep the focus on the local landscape: “Over the next decade, our energy system is going to dramatically change, and now is the time to get on with it.

“It’s critical we keep our eyes firmly on the target of replacing our ageing energy system and making sure we’re meeting growing electricity demand.

“More than 50 per cent of our energy generation still comes from coal and around 90 per cent of that is coming out of the NEM in the next decade.”

He also warned the community landscape was changing and it was imperative for industry to adapt.

“To continue to build trust, we need to deliver real benefits to local communities and they need to be socialised ahead of projects,” he said.

“We’re hearing from communities they want more transparency and involvement in shaping projects and they want to know the benefits up front - they don’t want surprises.

“From our recent experience, I’d go as far to say we have a new regional order here. And we need to listen, adapt and respond.

“A potential solution is nationally consistent, regulated payments for hosts and neighbours of renewable energy projects.

“A national framework where the government standardises payments to both hosts and neighbours would share the direct financial benefits more equitably, create transparency and allow us to build stronger community support.”

Mr Wheals also called for the Renewable Energy Developer Rating Scheme to be rolled out as quickly as possible.

“We are strong supporters of the developer rating scheme, but it's been talked about and it’s taking some time to get off the ground.

“Having the Renewable Energy Developer Rating Scheme up and running is going to be key to lifting the bar and making sure we’re all doing a better job.”
